In this activity, we were trying to figure out wind bealts over the Atlantic Ocean basins. Before we began this experiment, I thought that the winds blow the same way during the seasons (South for winter, and North for summer). So, for this activity, we had to take two note cards and make the patterens just like the winds have. We twist and turn one card, while writing on the other, to make a perfect replica. I learned that the winds change a lot, and that I was wrong with what I thought before. The winds move and change due to which hemisphere there on. This connects to my topic because it shows how we end up with hurricanes happening only during some times. Winds are needed for hurricanes to form, and it depends on the temperature of the water, and the winds are what help the water change temperatures.

Hurricanes are very deadly and very dangerous. Hurricanes are severe tropical storms that form in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Hurricanes gather their heat and energy through contact with warm ocean waters. Hurricanes increase their power by evaporation of seawater. Hurricanes rotate in a counter-clockwise direction around the center, which is called the eye. The eye is the calmest part of the storm. Hurricanes have winds at least 74 miles per hour and up to 200 miles per hour. When they come onto land, the heavy rain, strong winds and heavy waves can damage buildings, trees and cars. The heavy waves are called a storm surge.
Hurricane Classification
Hurricanes are classified into five categories, based on their wind speeds and potential to cause damage.
- Category One -- Winds 74-95 miles per hour
- Category Two -- Winds 96-110 miles per hour
- Category Three -- Winds 111-130 miles per hour
- Category Four -- Winds 131-155 miles per hour
- Category Five -- Winds greater than 155 miles per hour

What is storm surge?
Storm surges are the most devastating element of a hurricane. As a hurricane spirals around the storm, they push water into a mound at the storm’s center. This mound of water becomes dangerous when the storm reaches land because it causes flooding along the coast. The water piles up, unable to escape anywhere but on land as the storm carries it landward. A hurricane will cause more storm surge in areas where the ocean floor slopes gradually. This causes major flooding.
What happens to the environment and the people?

What is the difference between a hurricane and a typhoon?
There is no significant difference between a hurricane and a typhoon except geography. Tropical storms occur in several of the oceans, and except for their names, they are essentially the same type of storm. In the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and the Eastern Pacific Ocean, they are called hurricanes. In the Western Pacific Ocean, they are called typhoons. In the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal, and Australia, these types of storms are called cyclones.

How are hurricanes predicted?
Weather is really hard to predict, so trying to predict a hurricane would be impossible. Hurricanes form over the ocean where there aren't any weather stations. Forecastors have to use information from Hurricane Hunters to make a forecast. Forecastors try and predict if a hurricane will make it to land. If it does, then they have to warn people where the hurricane will land. Forecastors issue watches and warnings to let people know if they should evacuate. It's expensive to evacuate, so they want to be as accurate as possible. They also put out a strike probability so people know their chances of being in the path of the hurricane.
